Corner of Second and Church Streets

Read by Gloria Dettleff & Dorothy Falk May 2001

The church cemetery is located next to St Peter Lutheran Church at the north edge of the town.  This only church in town is located about one mile north of the public Looking Glass Township Cemetery. The church was originally located on the sight where the Looking Glass Township Cemetery is now located, so the earlier burials for the church are in that cemetery.  See our Church Index for the history, some records and links to St Peter Lutheran Church.

This is a recording of what we read from the stones plus spotty data from two other sources.  Most of the tombstones were readable, but all graves do not have stones.  Church cemetery records do not exist to check against.  However, the church records do exist and have been translated and transcribed from microfilmed Old German script by Gloria Dettleff.  Minor differences, such as which name is the first name and which is the middle, do exist between the two listings, it’s up to the researcher to determine which is correct.

This cemetery has family monoliths for some of the family plots.  Those stones have been ignored for the purpose of this listing.  For the purposes of this listing, the first stone that you come to when you walk from the parking lot is Row 1, Stone 1.

It was recommended that the County Clerk begin to keep track of the deaths/burials in 1878 and some, but not all, were recorded.  When the law changed in 1916, most of the deaths were recorded.  The death registers (marked 'Reg' in this listing) identified some people that were buried in this cemetery, and some who were buried in New Memphis.  Those that merely said New Memphis, and no stones were in either location, were added to the Looking Glass Cemetery listing since it is larger, for the lack of a better reason.  The church records (marked 'StP') also identified some people that were buried in this cemetery for which we didn’t find stones. We included the people from both of these sources in this listing. It is up to the researcher to decide if this is accurate. We welcome your comments and will be happy to made additions, corrections, and deletions. Just Contact Us.

The Veteran’s tombstones are annotated as either Private Head Stones ('PHS') or Government Head Stones ('GHS') for use by the Illinois Veterans’ Commission in their next publication, see 1956 Veterans' Honor Roll. The abbreviation 'S/w' stands for 'Shares stone with'.

If you visit this cemetery, please consider taking some pictures for our Tombstone Photo Project.
