James Barkley
Excerpt from the Union Banner, Carlyle, Illinois
Thursday, March 1, 1900.
Once more has the hand of death descended and taken away
another of those hardy pioneer settlers who by their noble efforts and
sacrifices in the earlier days, have blazed the way to civilization and
progress. Last Friday morning the community heard of the death of
Prof. James Barkley. It was just 4 o’clock a.m. when he gave
up his life…the end came just six days after the death of his wife…James
Barkley was born in Paris, Bourbon County, Ky., October 17, 1821.
He was married in Georgetown, Ky., October 17, 1842…He received his education
at the Bourbon Seminary, from which institution he graduated at the age
of 15 years with high honors. At that age he began his chosen profession,
that of teaching, which he followed, with few interruptions, until his
eyesight failed…(In 1863) James Barkley was chosen as the editor-in-chief
of the Constitution and Union, (now the Carlyle Constitution) which shortly
after made its appearance…Prof. Barkley was the first principal
to take charge of the present public school building. He taught here
a good many years prior to that in the various places in which school was
held…he also taught school in Huey and Wisetown.
